Practices in Conversation #5: 'Resonant Bodies: Embodied Memory and Somatic Revolt' - IFEEA Community Event

The IFEEA community event will offer two ‘Practices in Conversation’:

Dominique Savitri Bonarjee’s proposition From Postwar Butoh' “Rebellion of the Body” to Contemporary Somatic Revolt and

Clémentine Antier’s proposition ‘Embodied Memories as a Reservoir for Resonance’

This is the fifth of a series of free community events co-hosted by IFEEA generative- and core-members aiming to create a platform for sharing & conversing on eco-embodied practices - starting from what members do. Join us for a journey of embodied practices that deepen our connection to self, community, and the more-than-human world while inspiring ecological care and creative reciprocity. Participants will have an opportunity to experience the proposed practices and will have time to ask questions and engage in the emerging conversation.

Dominique Savitri Bonarjee’s proposition From Postwar Butoh' “Rebellion of the Body” to Contemporary Somatic Revoltexplores the radical legacy of Japanese Butoh dance as a living practice of resistance and metamorphosis. I introduce my book "Butoh, as Heard by a Dancer" (Routledge, 2024) which weaves together 10 conversations with first- and second-generation Butoh artists in Japan, alongside embodied research experiments. The presentation reflects on how Butoh’s visceral philosophy inspires the ecological, political and techno-ritual imaginaries of my art practice.

Clémentine Antier’s ‘embodied memories as a reservoir for resonance’ investigates  ecosomatic modalities that may foster a sense of connection to the more-than-human beyond direct contact. One approach is to tune into our embodied memory, rich of multiple layers of encounters with sky, forests, water bodies. We will explore these inner landscapes that have been forming throughout our life and notice how tuning into this embodied reservoir affect our phenomenological experience in the here and now and in relation to the more-than-human.

Dominique Savitri Bonarjee I am an artist working across physicality, sound, and visual art. Space of the Nameless designates my artistic practice, which explores forms of embodied and ambient knowledge, and how to render bodies porous to it. I create live installations activated through movement and ritual, often using experimental approaches to computational technologies. My project, Butoh Mutations, explores pedagogical aesthetics, by cross-pollinating Butoh and nondual wisdom traditions, to propose innovative forms of participation, collective somatic and spiritual research, and activism.  Spaceofthenameless.art  butoh.co.uk
