The Gift: Choreographies of Reciprocity with the NonHuman and Matter

  • Spazio Rossellini 18 Via della Vasca Navale Roma, Lazio, 00146 Italy (map)

Ecosomatic practice of choreographic co-creation with the non-human and matter for dancers, performers and actors offered for the sharing practice platform 'Sharing in Roma' at Spazio Rossellini, Rome.

Faced with the domination of the ego and technique over nature and the body, choreography offers itself as a morphic field of co-creation and reciprocity. What is reciprocity? A mirroring in the other's movement, an imitation, an affective attunement, a contagion? In the ecosomatic practice of the gift, each person offers the chorus a part of himself or herself by revealing with gestures, movements and words the autobiographical connection with an eco-material object and its place of origin. The chorus has the task of listening to the sensations and images that emerge from each offering and of investigating the possibilities and modes of response as a multi-body in a process of mutual adaptation.

In preparation for the practice, participants are asked to collect and carry an eco-material object - “the gift” - that embodies the experience of their connection to the earth. This can be any plant, mineral or animal form of vibrant matter: pieces of bark, feathers, pebbles, shells, cores, pine cones, dried flowers, leaves, twigs, seeds, etc. In reaching out to this gift, participants are invited to consider three questions: 'Where is home? Where do I find nature? Where do I feel my roots?”
